Happy At Homeschool: Madagascar

Friday was our movie night we watched the Dreamworks production Madagascar and we will be viewing part two this upcoming Friday. I thought I would mix fun and education with the movie.

The first thing we did was discuss where Madagascar is. Madagascar is off the coast of Africa. We also found it on a globe. The music of Madagascar is divided into three categories popular, traditional, and contemporary.
A valiha is one of the instruments they use and it sounds like this video:

The valiha is also used in western Indonesia.

The people of Madagascar eat with wooden spoons. I purchased some wooden spoons to paint on to represent the spoons they eat with.

Other activities this week are discussing the history, there is a lesson plan from PBS, and we are planning a Madagascar meal.

This week we are studying whales and the ocean there are various things I'm using to do this.

Free Willy A great movie about an orca named Willy. The owner of the amusement park in which Willy resides is just concerned about money. A boy races to save Willy's life. This is a great movie to teach respect for life, conservation, and ocean life.

CWPPRA of Louisiana has free curriculum disks, games, and literature all based on Louisiana wetlands. Included in the curriculum is a map of the land mass that they expect to be gone in the very near future.

Happy at Homeschool: Calorie Free Pizza Fraction Lesson

It's important to me to get fractions in my kids brains as painlessly as possible. Pizza and pies are, for me, the easiest way to teach fractions. I really don't want to feed my kids these things all the time though. It's just not healthy. I came up with a solution that is cheap, calorie free, and fun.

Why not make your own pizza? You will need, white, red, brown, and green construction paper (or whatever colors are typically on your pizza.) You'll also need scissors and glue. I ran out of red construction paper so I used red fabric paint.

On with the lesson:

We cut our pizza in to 8 pieces.
8 pieces out of 8 pieces = 8/8 or one whole pizza.

We gave our friend one piece 8-1=7. How much pizza is left? 7 pieces out of the 8 that was there at first. 7/8 would be our fraction.

We decided to give another piece of that pizza away. That makes 2 pieces all together that we've given away. 8-2=6 or 6 out of 8 pieces are left or 6/8 this reduces down and 2 goes in to 6 and 8 3/ 4 is our new reduced fraction.

We gave another piece away that makes 3 pieces we've given away. 8-3=5 or 5 pieces out of 8 or 5/8 of the pizza is left.

We gave yet another piece away. 8-4=4 Which means 4 pieces out of 8 are left or 4/8 is left this is of course divisible by 4. Four goes in to 4 1 time and 4 goes in to 8 2 times. Therefore, 4/8 is equal to 1/2. One half of the pizza has been eaten and one half is left. Now the cool thing is that one half also means there is only 50% of that pizza left.

The smallest child is hungry too so again a slice of that pizza is taken away 8-5=3 There is 3 out of 8 pieces of that pizza left or 3/8.

The middle child is hungry as well so she takes a slice of that pizza. There are 2 slices left six of those pizza slices went in someone's tummy. 2 out of 8 or 2/8 which can get smaller if we just divide by 2. 2 goes in to itself 1 time and two goes in to 8 4 times. 1/4 of that pizza is left which means the same as 2/8.

The oldest child just grabs a slice. How rude! He didn't even ask! Still the same this too, is a fraction. There is 1 piece of that pizza left. 7/8 have been eaten and 1/8 is left. I wonder who will get the last piece.

With all the children fed mommy decided she would eat as well. 8/8 of that pizza is gone or like any fraction that has itself as the numerator or denominator 1 whole. One whole pizza is gone. It's sad but true one whole pizza is gone and there is only you.

Years ago, I was involved in a great movement in educational history. Maybe it wasn't so great, to me it was. I went to public school and homeschool did not exist in my world. I hated getting out of bed every morning. School was not fun to me at all.

I was in 10th or 11th grade and my school system decided to have a TV studio. At the time it was assumed that we were first to have a studio. I truly don't know who was first but since its inception they are popping up every where in high schools.

When I became a member of this broadcast journalism class, I found a reason to wake up of the morning. I began to enjoy school. I had no clue that I could interview someone and feel comfortable doing it. I do admit to only being comfortable interviewing when a camera is on. I am a typically shy person.

To have a reason to learn pushed me to better myself academically. I still wasn't the best student in the world but I tried. I wrote interview rough drafts and became a little smart alecky by throwing in questions that weren't planned. Some didn't like me because of this and I can't say, at the time, I cared.

It was fascinating though. I met a lady who made a quilt for Arnold Schwarzenegger as a member of Cabin Creek Quilts. I even video taped a football game, boy did that end badly. To this day I've never been able to follow a football with a video camera and I am begging you, don't make me do it.

It was because of this class I somehow managed to pull myself through. It taught me so much, not just about camera angles, but about getting a beat as well. I lost a beat because I didn't listen to a rumor. Rumors can be important in journalism. It was whispered all through the school, "John Walsh from America's Most Wanted is here." I heard the rumor, but I did not call the mayor's office to snag an interview. John Walsh would have been an incredibly cool interview.

Long story short, I am no longer in the field of journalism. I am helping my children to pursue their dreams and ambitions. In the long run, I've acquired some mad, crazy research and interview skills.

Assignment:
If you have a video camera use it. If you don't have a video camera you can use a throw away camera or digital camera. I will give separate instruction for the two.

Important Questions:
Feel free to tailor your own questions. This is just an idea of what to do. You can even do an instructional video.
Who is your subject (the person you are interviewing)?
What do they do?
Why is what they do so important?
What are their current goals?
How does that affect others?
What are their future plans?
What is needed to achieve the goals previously mentioned?

Video:

The assignment is to interview anyone. Sky's the limit! If you think you can get an interview with the mayor or governor do it. You can interview anyone even your parents.

Don't wear pictures or text on clothing while on camera. This distracts your viewer from the subject.
If you are old enough to wear make-up, don't over do it.
Ummm... hum.. popping when you talk and redundancy (repeating yourself too much) gets distracting. Try to keep it to a minimum.
Smile. Never let them know you are nervous. Try to keep nervous habits knee bouncing, knuckle cracking, etc out of your video.
Put your camera on a tripod. This is more important than anything else. You have the first three seconds to impress. If your camera is wiggly, you lost your audience. If you don't have a tripod try and put it where it won't wiggle much.
Count down from three before you introduce yourself. In your head 'Three...two..one...' "Hi, I'm Jane Doe. I'm hear with marine biologist, Ziggy Johnson..."

Non-video interview:

The same questions apply. Take pictures of your subject, create a blog post or a family newsletter. Again, sky is the limit and since you aren't on camera you have a few extra doors open to you. I could not possibly interview Lisa Smith Batchen in person, using email I was able to do so. I took the artistic license not to edit her writing. I wanted it to be as "real" as I could by using her own words. She is incredibly inspiring. I highly recommend reading the interview. Lisa is one example of you can do anything when you put your mind to it. If you are so inclined you can even friend her on Facebook. Please ask for parental help and follow COPPA guidelines. Nothing is more important to me than keeping children safe.

Parents, you know what the abilities of your children are. This is a general idea of what you can do. More important than any of this is have fun and keep in mind most computers these days have editing software. It doesn't have to be perfect, just have fun!

Happy At Homeschool: To Those Who Oppose Homeschool

I have viewed a whole lot of articles on homeschooling and read the comments on blogs and the news sources with comments. I usually don't comment because those who oppose it make me laugh. Comments like, " I no nobody is qualified to do this." If you write like that maybe you aren't. Firstly, the word you are looking for is know. The "k" and the "w" are silent kind of like the word knife "k" is silent "i" is long and "e" is silent. Secondly, in this context you're using a double negative. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Then, there's text speak. It has a time and place on Twitter or Facebook. If you are able to write more than x number of characters BTW and LOL does not do it. If you are going to oppose homeschooling, I am begging you to show me you are educated enough to write properly in your native language. If you can't write properly, I daresay, you are not qualified enough to comment on said blogs or news sources.

It's true, I don't have a degree to teach. I wonder how many school house teachers had a college degree in the olden days. Laura Ingalls Wilder was a school teacher and she did not have a college degree and surprise! she was fifteen. You don't need a degree to teach, you need the heart to do so.

It's the government that requires a degree to teach in a public school system. You teach your own child when it is inside you. I read to my son before he was born. My four year old writes her name and recognizes shapes, colors, and alphabet. She is too young for public school since she's an October baby. My two year old sings his A,B,C's. A teacher didn't do this, I did.

As you can see I write coherently. Again, a teacher didn't teach me to write. My mom bought me a journal when I was a small child. I taught myself to write, teachers only encouraged it and it was almost never enjoyable it's akin to pulling teeth. My vocabulary, again, self-taught. All I'm saying is, if you don't want a homeschool mommy or daddy to laugh at you get your language together. We research what we do. I suppose you could say we homeschool ourselves. So, please homeschool yourself before you can pose an argument on homeschooling.

Happy At Homeschool: I Have A Second Grader

Just in the matter of an hour, I have a second grader.    This year has been chaotic not just for myself, but for my son as well. Our family has been in the middle of tons of changes. This first grade year my son was in public school at the beginning in July. I didn't know if I should send him or not because we were waiting to find out when our home would be built. After I made the decision to send him, I found he was being placed in the hallway an awful lot. The teacher complained about how he didn't pay attention during math. She knew we were leaving and she never sent a math book home.

By the end of August, my husband and I made the decision.   I was scared and nervous most of the year. I did the best I could under the circumstances. I, myself, have always had a hard time with math. I'm not surprised he takes after me since I work with him the most. I excelled in English, language, writing, and handwriting.

We began building our home and the impending move was an added reason to pull him. I met a girl on the build who said her sister does reviews. At the time I had no clue what she was talking about, I took the number and placed it in a Hooked on Phonics book because I knew I would never throw the book out while I have small children.

I joined co-ops and homeschool groups. Through reading conversations that others posted I picked up what a review is. I also admit to being a huge procrastinator, so, I waited until last month to call her. I didn't know if her number had changed but I took a chance and YIPPEE! Her number didn't change.

I have a year of experience under my belt, and the review is out of the way. I feel a little more relaxed and confident. We are going to be a little less school like this month while I work on planning our school. We will be doing some summer reading and what not from Barnes & Nobel. My summer is filled but the reading doesn't stop there. In September we have a packet coming from Pizza Hut's reading program.

Other things we will be looking for is a DVD from the History Channel and our Lessons Pathways plans. I do have things that are supplemental.such as Cornerstones of Freedom series (mine are much older than that).

I need to start writing my book lists and what not. My goal this year is to be better organized and to be on top of things. My son will start writing dates on his paperwork as well as his name. I want to keep a calendar for attendance.

Happy At Homeschool: Review Time!

Tomorrow we all wake up and get ready to have a portfolio review. This past year, our first year has been challenging. I did mostly everything on guess work, we were denied public textbooks and we couldn't afford a curriculum. It took until the end of the year for my first grader to get that look in his eyes that says, "I get it!" He loves to read and to learn through stories, that is how I should have spent my time. I should have looked for stories on everything from addition all the way on. In later years I can see myself purchasing "Life of Fred."

I should have thought about it sooner. Math, to me is dull and dry, and he learns the same way I do. Except I never saw a math story book before so I didn't know they existed. Music is another way that things just help to click with him. He knows what a fraction is, thanks to Mr. Dewey.

This year has been a learning experience for both of us. The child that they had started to label "problem child" is a creative child. He learns through creativity and hands on activity. A teacher that does nothing but talk doesn't teach him a thing and results in another zombie child.

He is like me, I remember when I first gained an interest in history. I had horrible grades until I had one history teacher that saw outside the box. This teacher, I had in grade school and high school. He was discussing imports and exports, the entire class was tied in thread. The lesson wasn't particularly special, the fact that to this day I recall it was about import and export is incredible. In high school, he taught the American Civil War. We killed each other with paper wads. I began collecting books on the Civil War.

This public school teacher knew that if the principal saw it he could get in trouble, he covered the window on the door in construction paper. A teacher like this shouldn't be scared to teach. He should be encouraged to teach. I believe he still works for the school system so, I am not going to mention his name, but I will commend him for not just teaching, but caring for his students. We were not just another group of kids, he genuinely cared. He voted against a school strike for a raise because it would ruin our graduation. After I had a two week bronchitis thing, my grade in Law class went down (he taught law too) he took me outside the class and asked what was going on because my grades had been A's and B's. That two weeks I slept nearly the entire time and there was no way to catch up. He cared enough to pull me out to have a talk. He was a great teacher.

This teacher is part of the reason I pulled my son from public school. This is the only teacher I had like this. This is the only teacher that I recall specific lessons, days, and things that I have learned. Interactivity in school works but it isn't used for the most part. Maybe teachers are scared to teach this way? Maybe they think it's kind of preschoolish? Seems like that Waldorf guy felt it was affective too.

Next year we will be supplementing Happy at Homeschool with Lesson Pathways, we will be working a little more on cursive, and the Japanese language.

It's come to my attention that others are having difficulty getting Spanish lessons for their children.

Firstly, if you know nothing about Spanish I advise 1,2,3 Teach Me This will teach you the verbal aspect of Spanish. Which do you learn first to talk or to write? You have to have some language skill before you can write.

Learn Spanish Online Free will teach you about nouns, adjectives, adverbs etc.

How to write in Spanish discusses punctuation. If you look above to my blog title you will see that my title is "!Hola!" The exclamation point in front of the "H" is supposed to be upside down. I have no clue how to do that on a computer. Other than that my punctuation is correct.

Wouldn't it be nice to speak with someone who speaks the language? I found a chat site that does just that My Language Exchange.

My own kids learn the best through music

Enchanted Learning has a lot of fun activities especially if you have a smaller child.

and last but not least MIT offers Opencourseware for Spanish. That means you can take a college level class at your own pace and the lecture notes are already there and sometimes video as well.

If you're just teaching the basics maybe you can ask around. Maybe another parent can help out you may be surprised.

Today, since it's Martin Luther King day, we will be reading "Rosa Parks Fight For Freedom" By Keith Brandt Illustrated by Gershom Griffith ISBN 0-8167-2831-3 (c) 1993

I can't truly say that the Civil Rights movement began in the 1950's. I would have to go for the 1850's before the American Civil War when abolishinist were writing books like "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe or "Autobiography of a Female Slave" By Martha Griffith Browne which wasn't an autobiography at all.

Was it right to hold a slave? No, it most certainly was not. The Civil War began with slavery being an important reason to go to war. I don't know if the slaves could have been freed without the war.

In 1863 Sixteenth President Abraham Lincoln came up with "The Emancipation Proclamation." Which states:

"January 1, 1863

A Transcription
By the President of the United States of America:
A Proclamation.

Whereas, on the twenty-second day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-two, a proclamation was issued by the President of the United States, containing, among other things, the following, to wit:

"That on the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free; and the Executive Government of the United States, including the military and naval authority thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of such persons, and will do no act or acts to repress such persons, or any of them, in any efforts they may make for their actual freedom.

"That the Executive will, on the first day of January aforesaid, by proclamation, designate the States and parts of States, if any, in which the people thereof, respectively, shall then be in rebellion against the United States; and the fact that any State, or the people thereof, shall on that day be, in good faith, represented in the Congress of the United States by members chosen thereto at elections wherein a majority of the qualified voters of such State shall have participated, shall, in the absence of strong countervailing testimony, be deemed conclusive evidence that such State, and the people thereof, are not then in rebellion against the United States."

My son jusst created his first simple circuit. This he learned this mostly on his own with a little help from daddy. I'm not great at science but I am pretty good at research. Tho start with I found a virtual site. Those are wonddderful because I don't have to worry about the house going up in flames.

Happy At Homeschool: Teaching Story Elements

We are learning about story elements in my household. I think it's important to make learning fun and I found a site that fits even my four year old.

It's called Interactives It reads the story Cinderella and when it's done it discusses setting,, characters, sequence, exposition, conflict, climax, and resolution. It even throws out a few big words like protaganist and antagonist. An easy way to remember the two words pro means for i.e for the good guy. Anta is anti good guy or against.

The site has other subject and other features that I can only define as cool. I don't want to hand it back over to the kids. I suppose if I must...

Harcort School Publishers offers a test It's kind of wordy and since it doesn't read back it' would be for a kid who can read. Warning: there is a loud sound as you start that will startle you or annoy you so you might want to keep your volum down.

My own kids learn through music. It's pretty difficult for me to get it all in their head unless I start with music.

I find my kids singing at the top of their lungs the words to these songs. They usually won't learn it unless I uptalk it. "It's so cool! I love this song!" I make sure to learn the words so I can sing with them and so far, for me, it works really well.

There isn't much else that I like online to teach the elements of a story. We tend to go with an interactive approach.

My kids will be learning a bit about Benjamin Franklin. We will be reading Benjamin Franklin, Amazing American By: Margaret Davidson Illustrated by John Speirs from Dell Yearling (c) 1988 by Parachute Press, Inc. ISBN: 0-440-40021-X

First, I think it's important that I point out I only purchase books used. That explains the copyright. An added note: I used to tutor children long before my own came about. So, a majority of the books I typically mention are older unless we take a library trip.

My kids are younger kids so I will be doing most of the reading since this book has 88 pages and quite wordy for a smaller child.

I am also introducing a video series I found online that is cartoonie.

Happy At Homeschool: Oh, Dear!

You heard it "Oh, dear!" In Montgomery, NY a homeschooling couple of four children were arrested. Richard and Margie Cressy were arrested for not registering with their school district. This case had been turned over to Child Protective Services and Montgomery County District Attorney.

I have stated how important that letter of intent is. This is exactly why it is so incredibly important. I was fortunate, I knew people who homeschool and I have the internet. Maybe this couple didn't have those resources.

Here is my arguing point: CPS? I mean really? Where the children bruised and beaten? Did they act odd? I've worked with children quite a bit before my own, in a public school setting. I know what abused children act like. I was an abused child. In any way, shape or form were these children in danger?

I've read other reports on how the curriculum wasn't what the district wanted. If I recall we homeschool because we don't feel public school it is for our own children and most of us can't afford a private school. I, personally, homeschool because my own child that watches computer science videos spent way too much time in the hallway staring at walls. I've also heard that his teacher was a real scream (literally.)

My issue with the curriculum... Who was the 16th president of the U.S.A.? In public school we are taught that honest Abraham Lincoln read by candle light. That's right, honest abe was home schooled. Did he have to follow his area's curriculum? Highly unlikely. He was a lawyer, state legislator, a member of The House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, and the first Republican president of the U.S.A. He did more than most who follow public school curriculum.

Was Abraham Lincoln abused? Did they call CPS on him? Oh, that's right no phone. That Bell fellow didn't come up with the phone until after Lincoln's death. Speaking of ALexander Grahm Bell, he was another fellow who was home schooled.

I am all for programs to help others for God's sake I'm a Democrat and we're notorious for spending on social causes. I am not for the government abuse of these programs. This I would put under government abuse by two social organizations the public school system, and Child Protective Services. The money they are wasting to go after this one family to make an example of could be money to improve the school system.

Something is going to have to change. I am now seeing where our government is broken and it hurts.

Happy At Homeschool: Sir Isaac Newton

Since Google is celebrating the birth of Sir Isaac Newton it would be fitting to do a lesson on it.

Newton is credited with the laws of motion.

Newton's First Law (also known as the Law of Inertia) states that an object at rest tends to stay at rest and that an object in uniform motion tends to stay in uniform motion unless acted upon by a net external force.

Newton's Second Law states that an applied force,F , on an object equals the rate of change of its momentum, p, with time. Mathematically, this is expressed as

F= dp/dt = d/dt (mv) = v dm/dt + m dv/dt.
Since the second law applies to an object with constant mass (dm/dt = 0), the first term vanishes, and by substitution using the definition of acceleration, the equation can be written in the iconic form F=ma

Newton's Third Law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This means that any force exerted onto an object has a counterpart force that is exerted in the opposite direction back onto the first object.

Happy At Homeschool: Unschool?

Since we are still technically homeschool babies, we are learning as we go, and unschooling looks like it may be for us. My son used to love reading. He began reading at the age of three before school took over. Now he dislikes reading. I need to bring the interest back. Maybe if I just do what I did before he was in school he will begin to enjoy what is going on. This means, field trips, and just doing learning all day but in a sneaky way, the real word way.

I remember when my interest in the American Civil War began. I had a teacher who made us throw paper wads at each other. He told about the Civil War as we killed each other with paper wads. He placed construction paper on the window because what he did was "bad" by public school standards. After that I began to insist my family purchase books about the Civil War for my birthdays and Christmas. I began to learn on my own. My best Jeopardy category was the Civil War.

Most teachers don't teach like that. If they had then I would have obtained more information. A good portion, in my experience, stop caring for the kids or never cared to begin with and those that do care are right out of school and live in public school limbo. Those are the ones that they just taught learning isn't fun.

Learning is fun and I need to bring the light back in to my son's eyes that he lost in public school. At this point I've missed the mark, in my own opinion. I am not meeting my own standards and I think if I unschool and stop following a curriculum as strongly as I was we just may get back on track.

I need to introduce math games, figure out how to play manacala, purchase Monopoly and just have fun. My son doesn't know that he is beginning to learn fractions because he cooks with me. He knows 1/2 + 1/2= 2/2 or 1 whole I can't find the right measuring cups because of the move and that has forced me to measure a little differently.

Point is he is learning when I don't even know it. He has been watching videos on his own from MIT in computer science. I am not forcing this on him he clicks on the links all on his own. So, I think this may be the way for us. I have more resources than anyone could imagine. I have a library in my basement. I used to tutor and I've collected books since I was 23. Thirteen years later I have more books than most moms as well as access to my mom's books (she was a teacher.)

I tend to not like structure yet, another reason unschooling would be perfect. We didn't have structure before school and he read beyond other kids. I think I need to go back to what it was before school. This way of learning isn't as much of a challenge to me because I would go to a store and point out colors and numbers. We would read signs and discuss the shapes of objects in public.

When public school came about this didn't happen so much and learning became a chore for both of us. We had to do it. Do you enjoy doing house work? Why? Because you have to do it. Same principle here if you have to do it you're not going to want to do it.

As I learn about other ways to homeschool I'll post about them but I think for us this will be the way.

Happy Ay Homeschool: The Nutcracker

On Saturday my older kids will be going to the ballet "The Nutcracker." So, I will be spending all week talking about things Nutcracker related. Starting with The Nutcracker Illustrated by Roberta Collier-Morales. Who also has a wonderful site with her drawings.

This is also the first time I will introduce Tchaikovsky (warning: If you fear teaching your kids about people who are gay don't watch the movie). So, that isn't completely true. My kids were introduced to Tchaikovsky when Mattel put out the Barbie Movie The Nutcracker. Believe it or not Barbie has become a wonderful teaching source. I don't think my kids would be interested in The Nutcracker had it not been for Barbie.

Did you know there was a Nutcracker Museum? They have nutcrackers that are really old and if you get a chance to look in their archives it is time well spent. I can honestly see a history lesson evolve out of this. There is a site with a lot of links to all things nutcracker related including crafts.

There is another site the speaks briefly of the history of the nutcracker. This site has a link to a virtual story book from the New York Ballet.

Make peanut butter cookies

1 cup peanut butter (any kind)
1 cup sugar (granulated)
1 large egg

Preheat oven 350°F.Mix sugar and egg together, then and peanut butter. That's it. Now form into 1" balls an press with fork. Dip fork in a little sugar so it won't stick.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes at 350°F.
Reese's Peanut Butter can be used; add chocolate chips, raisins, M&M'S® - be creative!
Makes 1 dozen cookies.

Since we aren't going organic we are going to cut down on some sugar. I'm going to try 3/4 of a cup of sugar.

Happy At Homeschool: Teaching Human Rights

This morning President Obama received his Nobel Peace Prize. I think this also leaves an opportunity open to teach human rights to my children.

Human rights are for everyone no matter your race, color, gender (weather you're a boy or girl).

In the United States we have certain freedoms:

In the 19th century, John Stuart Mill was an important philosopher who thought about human rights. He said that people should be able to control their own bodies and minds. He talked about three special ideas:

freedom of speech
freedom of assembly
freedom to do what a person wishes if it does not harm others (even if other people think it is bad)

Hegel was a philosopher who talked about the idea of free will. He also talked about what makes a person free: that a person has to have certain relations with other people to have true freedom. A person has to be able to:

own property
make contracts with other people
make moral promises to people
live with anyone
get protection from laws
have a voice in government

A list of the most recognized human rights:

Right to live, exist.
To work for anyone
To own property
Speech
Security
Safety from violence
Protection from the law
Not being arrested unless there is reason to think someone has committed a crime
Having a fair trial

To be seen as innocent, even if a person is arrested, until the person is found to be guilty by a fair court

To seek asylum if a country treats you badly
To think freely
To believe and practice the religion a person wants
To peacefully protes
To a basic standard of living (food, shelter, clothing, etc.)

I think one of the most important things in teaching human rights is to lead by example. Talk about the injustices in the world and discuss organizations that try to work on those injustices. Don't just watch the news, interact with the news. When the broadcasters tell you of an injustice in a country look for a solution. That is the broadcasters goal, to open your eyes. All that negative news isn't really negative. It is a doorway to possibilities. The possibility that you can help save someone. The possibility to break down barriers of hate. The possibility that we all can be seen as human not rich, poor, sick, black, white, Hispanic just human.

Happy At Homeschool: Frusteration Abounds

I may have previously mentioned my frustration at a school system that labels a kid as disruptive even though he doesn't do anything other than stare blankly at the teacher. Now, I am even more frustrated. I am so bad at math and Kanawha county schools has led me to basically roast and they are not giving me school materials promised by school legislation. Subdivision (3) applies to both subdivision (1) and (2) and requires the county to:

1) provide textbooks, resources, and other teaching materials at the request of the instructor.

2) allow homeschooled children to attend classes at the local public school, if the instructor requests it, subject to availability and normal registration.

Well, those materials have not been provided and I have requested. In fact I made a phone call and the answer was "We do not provide materials to first graders." So, now I wonder if the school system is trying to sabotage the situation and if I will have to get help from HSLDA. This situation is really ridiculous and I need all the help I can get.

It's not that I am poor in math. I'm quite good at it. I should be good at math it took me three years to pass Algebra with an "A". My problem is how to teach it. I am stuck in public school limbo. The way I know is public school. My son needs a more interactive approach.

Added to my frustration is the lack of cyber/ virtual schools that are free in my region. I have a friend in Ohio who home schools at a wonderful virtual school she receives help with keeping her internet, obtaining a computer, and a printer. We have had a string of unreliable computers and printers. I just want to scream sometimes.
